They sold a dream. Universal childcare. Free for everyone.

Sounded good... until you ran the numbers.

The new Earths Lost History video for "The Math Don't Lie" is out now, and we ran those numbers. No spin, no slogans, just arithmetic. Here's a taste.

Every number, every source: Read the full breakdown on Substack

Remember the Free Buses?

Before childcare, Zohran Mamdani's big promise was free buses. The MTA tried it on five routes for one year and spent about $16.5 million. Ridership went up, and then the fares came back. So who was actually riding, and what does that tell you about the next promise?

How Many Seats Did "Universal" Deliver?

Mamdani promised care for every kid. This fall, his 2-K program opened with 2,000 seats. New York City has about 60,000 toddlers. That's about 3%. Do the math in your head, then ask what happens to the other 58,000.

"Two thousand seats—tell me how that's real."

What Does "Phase Two" Really Mean?

The city calls this phase one. But 2-K is for two-year-olds, and kids keep having birthdays. Meanwhile private care runs around $20,000 a year. Who's still in line when the program finally shows up?

"By phase two hits, that kid's a grown man."

Who Pays the Bill?

New York City's budget was roughly $116 billion last year, and nearly $126 billion under Mamdani now. The top 1%, about 40,000 people, pay 40 to 50 percent of the city's income tax. What happens when you raise taxes on a house of cards?

"Tax them more, they bounce—those are the odds."

Doesn't Europe Make It Work?

That's always the comeback. France is running a deficit of over 5% of GDP with debt near 120%, and Germany's economy has stalled. And there's one line item the Nordic-model crowd never mentions. Who's paying for the shield?

"They fund more daycare while their armies stall,
Then dial America when the Russians call."

So Who's Holding the Bag?

It won't be the politicians, and it won't be the high earners who already left. The song gives the answer in its last line. The full article walks through every number, from the bus pilot to the tax base, and shows the receipts.
